ChatGPT Twitter Integration: Connect ChatGPT to X via MCP

Search for a ChatGPT Twitter integration and you'll mostly find automation recipes: a trigger fires, the OpenAI API writes text, a tweet goes out. This guide covers the other route, connecting ChatGPT itself to your X (formerly Twitter) account: plans, setup on web, desktop and Codex CLI, what to ask, and when a workflow fits better.

What a ChatGPT Twitter Integration Can and Can't Do

MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets an AI app call outside tools. In ChatGPT, Postory is a developer-mode app that talks to your Postory account, not to X. The X connection stays on Postory's side, so ChatGPT never gets your X password or X tokens.

That answers the "ChatGPT Twitter API" question: no X developer account or API key, just an OAuth sign-in to Postory.

What ChatGPT can do through it:

• Read your own X posts, replies, following and followers, once imported into Postory.
• Draft posts and threads in your Postory workspace.
• Publish or schedule a draft to your X account after a preflight check.
• Start an import of fresh data, after a cost preflight.

What it can't do: like, follow, send DMs or reply to other people's posts. It works with X only, not Threads or Bluesky, and can't fetch other accounts' history.

What You Need First: A ChatGPT Plan With Developer Mode

ChatGPT reaches a custom MCP server through developer mode. OpenAI's developer mode guide lists it for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web. ChatGPT Free isn't listed.

From OpenAI's Help Center article on developer mode:

• Admins first. In Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, an admin turns developer mode on under Workspace Settings → Permissions & Roles → Connected Data. On Business, only admins and owners can use it. On Enterprise and Edu, members an admin grants access then find the toggle under Settings → Apps → Advanced settings.
• Publishing depends on your plan. The article says full MCP support, including write actions, is a beta for Business, Enterprise and Edu, and gives Pro read/fetch permissions. The developer mode guide lists Plus and Pro without that split. On Plus or Pro, publishing and scheduling from ChatGPT may not be available. Postory's tools also aren't marked read-only, and OpenAI's guide treats unmarked tools as write actions, so a read/fetch-only plan may treat every Postory tool as one, reads included. Try "List my connected X accounts in Postory" first.
• Not on mobile. MCP apps aren't available in ChatGPT's mobile app.

Connect X to ChatGPT on the Web

First, sign up for Postory and connect your X account on the Accounts page.

1. Open Settings → Security and login and turn on Developer mode.
2. Open Plugins, select the plus button and create a developer-mode app.
3. Name it Postory, enter https://postory.io/mcp and choose OAuth. If asked for a registration method, choose Dynamic Client Registration (DCR).
4. Sign in to Postory and approve access.
5. In a chat, open the Plus menu → Developer mode and select Postory.

If a label doesn't match, check the ChatGPT (web) setup steps.

ChatGPT adds its own safety step. Per OpenAI's guide, write actions require confirmation by default, and you can remember your choice for the rest of a conversation. Because Postory's tools aren't marked read-only, expect that prompt even when ChatGPT only reads.

Use It in the ChatGPT Desktop App and Codex CLI

The desktop app and Codex CLI connect differently: they read Codex's MCP configuration, which the desktop app, Codex CLI and the Codex IDE extension share.

In the desktop app:

1. Open Settings and select MCP servers.
2. Select Add server.
3. Enter a name, choose Streamable HTTP and paste https://postory.io/mcp as the URL.
4. Save the server, then select Restart.
5. In the server list, select Authenticate next to Postory and approve the scopes.
6. Type /mcp in the composer to reach the connected servers.

In Codex CLI, it's two commands:

codex mcp add postory --url https://postory.io/mcp
codex mcp login postory

What to Ask ChatGPT to Do With Your X Account

Start with a read-only check: "List my connected X accounts in Postory." Then try requests like these:

• Search. "Find my posts about pricing." Search works by meaning, not exact words.
• Review. "Show my ten most-viewed posts from the last 90 days."
• Draft. "Turn these notes into a five-part thread." Nothing goes out at this step.
• Schedule. "Schedule that thread for Tuesday at 9am."

Reading needs data imported into Postory. ChatGPT can start an import after a preflight shows what it'll fetch and the cost, and it's told to wait for your yes, because imports spend credits. How approval works. By default, ChatGPT is told to show you the post and ask first. Postory can't check your chat reply. Remembering a choice in ChatGPT doesn't skip that page. You can also manage or disconnect connected apps, including taking publishing away without disconnecting.

ChatGPT in Chat vs Automation Workflows for X
